Now We Know!

We've struggled with water in our basement since we moved in back in 2004. Campbell Homes has been good about offering advice, helping with trouble-shooting and even performing minor repairs. Our latest episode started in Aug 08 during and after a big rain. Even though the rain was coming into the same room, it was coming in to a different spot in the room (under the window well).

After talking with Campbell they thought it was the downspot not day lighting properly. However, after re-routing the downspout well away from the house, we still got water in (last Friday). Becky called Campbell back and they sent Jeff over to take a look. His suspicision was the french drain under the window well and he agreed to send some guys over this Monday to start digging and possibly have to repair the drain. He thought it might take them half-day, perhaps an entire day to find and fix the problem.

After a dry weekend both inside and out, they showed up to begin work. Unfortunately they didn't have to dig far to find the source of the problem.

In the words of one of the men from Campbell Homes, "We shouldn't be seeing what we're seeing." Basically the initial construction crew just put some plywood and thin sheet metal up against the wooden window frame (see below) and then covered up their "work" with dirt. This of course explains why water would seep in with big rains. Unsure what the actual fix will be.

Wednesday Update

Not much visible evidence but it appears they are preparing things for either concrete or some sort of covering.

Thursday Update

Progress today. A layer of protection along with tar/pitch to seal the board/surface to the house. I'm assuming this is the layer that will be used to hold the concrete.

Friday Update
