Youth Choir Tour - Day Three
Receiving introduction/overview from park service ranger
While it may sound strange, visiting the Oklahoma memorial and learning about the tragedy which took place here was probably one of the highlights of the trip. We were just a short bus ride and so we arrived first thing in the morning. Our experience started with an introduction by a Park Service ranger who gave an overview of what transpired on that fateful day as well as the recovery efforts, building the memorial, etc. Very informative.
Original words left from rescue workers
There were various reminders left behind and I felt this was quite poignant.
Memorial of those in the building
Fence outside the complex where notes, memorabilia, etc. is still left from visitors
During the initial cleanup efforts, people would pictures, notes, etc. expressing their sorrow and concern. This section of the fence was preserved and is still used for the same purpose today. We were told that all the items are archived weekly and preserved.
Entrance to the museum
This building housing the museum, which was also damaged in the explosion, was very moving and told much of the background of the attack and the details about those who perished.
All told we spent appx. 3 hours touring all the sights here and the kids seemed very appreciative for the opportunity.
From here we went to lunch at the riverwalk. June 14th is always a very special day for the Boyd's and Rollow's. Brandon and Lynna both celebrate birthdays, Brandon turned 16 and Lynna turning 15. The day started however with a visit to a local water park where a good time was had by all. Afterwards we went to the riverwalk area of Oklahoma City for mexican food and a little sightseeing.
